Deputy Johnson was shot and killed while he and another officer were investigating a report of unknown individuals discharging firearms in the area of Union Street and Jefferson Street.
The suspect fled to Georgia, where he shot and killed City Marshal Harman Yancey, with the Helena Police Department, in January 1914. Despite his fatal injuries, the marshal was able to return fire and kill the suspect.
Deputy Johnson served with the Duval County Sheriff's Office for 11 months. He was survived by his parents, two sisters, and five brothers.
