Officer Everett was shot and killed while investigating a burglary at Newark Shoe store located at 27 W. Forsyth Street. Officer Everett discovered the doors of a shoe store had been tampered with and went inside to investigate. Officer Everett was shot by the suspects, who were standing in darkness, in a hail of gunfire. Both suspects were sailors and were captured. One of the suspects was shot by another officer.
